I took these pictures of Fort Sumter in March of 2019. It seems fitting to post these pictures in April. Visitors are only able to spend one hour on the fort, so I made quick use of my time.
It is important to note that the damage inflicted on Fort Sumter by Union cannons in the later half of the war was far worse than the damage inflicted from April 12-13, 1861, by Confederate cannons. The fort’s walls were repeatedly pulverized by Union bombardment. Sadly, the Confederates had slave labor maintain the fort’s defenses until the very last.
We visited Fort Sumter by way of ferry from Patriots Point. You’ll notice the USS Yorktown picture below. If we had more time, I would have toured the famous Yorktown.
